Tuesday September 1. More on partly seen faces.

Following on from the self portrait in charcoal that I posted two days ago, I decided to tackle the same image in colour, in acrylics.

I moved on from just blue to adding a mauve/grey mix.

More blue, and looking for the red in the image

The image had a yellow light from the right, so I added that with thin cadmium yellow, even though it came out a bit too dark

I worked with some white and all the colours to bring up what may be the final stage of this study. I have to resist fiddling with it and trying for a likeness.

While watching TV news this morning, I was confronted with the following interview with bad lighting. This happens so often now, when things happen on Zoom rather than in controlled studio lights.

It made me think about how we scan faces for information. Perhaps a major source of our collective anxiety comes from struggling with talking to masks. While in front of the telly with my camera, in 5 minutes I captured a load of glimpsed faces. I particularly like closing in on blurred backgrounds.I intend doing quick sketches from these.

I chose the following from one of the photos

I started a quick sketch in pastel using purple and brown. I find areas are filled quickly if one uses the side of the pastel.

The next stage adds white to fill in light areas, and to blend the other colours with. There is no likeness to strive for, only an impression.

This is like a research project. It needs some thought and more quick drawings

Yes, less is more so often -and coupled with speed, it is even more effective.

Love the way you follow through with your ideas.
