About 2 or 3 years ago I did the following acrylic painting from some photos I took of seed pods on pond irises.
Having found some small canvasses, I decided to do a quick study from one of these photos. I am trying to work in a broad way, not get too fussy. Direct painting with a medium brush.
More of this. Broad sweeps of blue and red with some yellow. Titanium white used to correct some background shapes.
More of the same, a bit of correction and rationalisation. Some very thin cerulean blue washed onto background. Will leave this as a study.
One consequence of rummaging through piles of old work is that a painting appears that did at some time receive a lot of attention but now looks overworked and “soulless” . This still life was done about 3 years ago. I photographed it at the time in stages.
This was a deliberately crowded arrangement of many objects.
After many sessions I ended up with this painting. I was increasingly disliking it. I painted out the ceramic cat in the background and put the painting aside to think about what to do next.
Still hating the painting, I have decided to attack it for experimental purposes. I started blocking some areas with white gesso.
And more in the background.
To completely challenge the table top illusion I have added more to the foreground. New vertical shapes have appeared, and a different sense of space.
I have added some washes of yellow and orange to the white areas. I feel motivated to make some more changes, but I am not sure what they might be. It might get somewhere- or not.
