Sunday August 16. Some stages of a new picture.

Writer's picture: Tony JacksonTony Jackson

A bit of a gap since my last blog. Sometimes other things happen in a hermit's life.

I was, in Wednesday's blog, starting another pastel study of a twig with lichen. Well it failed. So I resorted to using the modern day version of the camera obscura. Using my digital projector (the black box at the bottom of the next photo) I cast the enhanced photo onto a pad of cartridge paper and quickly traced around some of the shapes with a light blue pastel.

With the photo on my tablet I started blocking out some of the dark areas with purple pastel.

More purple and some green-

And more-

Added areas of light blue-

In the next stage I started adding some red. This throws up the main problem with pastels. Areas and details are getting too dark and white pastel on top doesn't cover well. So I am also adding touches of white acrylic with a small brush direct from the tube. This is a remedy that will continue as the picture develops. Oh, and I did a bit of smudging of background with a tissue.

Oh, for those of you who don't know, Josie got 4 A* passes in her A-levels. We are very proud of her.
