Saturday, June 27th. Starting a painting

I have chosen a view of the allotments that is about sweeping lines with a mass of angles. The broad sweep of the image must remain a centre of attention, avoiding becoming too sidetracked by details. The longer a line the sooner it should be drawn.

I started with direct painting in thin cerulean blue (acrylics).

To keep the broad view in mind I decided to repeat the task using thin cadmium red. The random choice of colours keeps the focus on structure rather than naturalism.

I then repeated with the blue again, also suggesting some areas of dark tone.

In the next stage I used some thin cerulean blue to tone down some of the pale green areas of the photo. Then I mixed the red and blue to make some of the dark areas stronger.

Then I used some heavy body white to block out some of the lighter areas and to cover some of the strong lines made earlier. It is very important to avoid clear detail and to keep moving quickly around the picture

More will follow!
