Sometimes the desire to paint is there, but no clear goal is in mind. What can happen is almost random. Feeling stuck, I cut out a triangle of card and used it as a template to make a pattern. Very reminiscent of lessons done years ago with 12 year-olds. I then started shading by rubbing charcoal into the shapes.
The A2 sheet of paper is now covered.
Having strong feelings of “so what”, I tried rubbing in some coloured pastel as well.
And more.
I felt it needed something else so I drew 2 parallel lines to see if it looked like a needle threading through the triangles. I quite like it but it is very shallow.
Remembering how, as a student, I used to doodle around random splashes on a drawing board, I took a small canvas that was waiting to be used and made some random daubs with thin acrylic, just in Cadmium red and Phthalo blue. I let the paint drip a bit, anything to keep it random.
As I did this, I got the feeling of being in a cave looking out towards the light.
Using a small brush I painted with titanium white as well as red and blue. Looking for any suggestion of forms, while avoiding obvious figurative elements.
This has concluded ,I think, with all areas being more worked and all the perimeter quite dark. I may be tempted to do more. I quite like this because of it's ambiguity. Clarity can seem like the enemy at times!
I have more to show, but will leave it to the next blog, which I hope wont be too long
fascinating to see what whacky things you've been getting up to down there!
