Monday May 4. More inventions with pastel, and some thoughts about drawing

I start with the pastel I was doing in my last blog, final version

Actually I did do a bit more since that photo was taken. Anyway, before I show my latest pastel, I want to show a few Van Gogh drawings. They illustrate what he was about as much as his paintings.

He had a codified range of marks that he made as he methodically developed his compositions.

See this more developed study. He used pencil with ink and a reed pen.

And this one better known for the painting that followed.

Well. Follow that. Here is a start I made, drawing freely and quickly with pale blue pastel.

Looking for dark areas-

Also rubbing in areas such as sky. This way of working depends on firmly fixing with hair spray at each stage to avoid too much blending

Green hard conte crayon was added, then some red and a few other colours

More of all colours-

Disliking the branching shapes at the bottom, I decided to get rid of them-

I think this is taking on more of a global warming aspect. I think it may have a title-"the Edge". I have sprayed it at least 6 times. It gets propped up by the TV. Who knows what other changes may happen. I suppose I am controlling it but it feels like it has a life of its own!
