Monday August 24. A pastel study of fungus.

Writer's picture: Tony JacksonTony Jackson

Having spent some time on the laptop doing experiments with the fungi photos, for some reason I just started a pastel study of one of the images. I drew some shapes quickly in orange, and then blocked in areas of yellow and mauve. I deliberately smudged with my fingers as well.

The aim is to quickly fill the page without attention to detail.

Though the fungus was growing on a log, the colour enhancement I had done with the photo caused the log part to appear blue. This seemed like a useful contrast.

The complexity of the subject has led to a rather time-consuming project. I felt the need to complete the page. Bearing in mind the concept that a picture only really gets going once all the white paper is covered, I planned to go over it again (having fixed it) with thin hard pastels to get more form and structure.

This is the state of the work now. There are bits I hate because the drawing gets a bit sloppy. I will prop it up and see which changes are necessary. So far I have used very few colours and no black. If I can keep it that way I will be pleased.
