Friday July 31. Rectangles and colours.

Writer's picture: Tony JacksonTony Jackson

I have been pressing on with adding colour to the shapes with the aid of masking tape-

Now all the shapes have been filled and I have tilted the image through 90 degrees. One of my tutors at art college was fond of saying that painting starts when all the areas have been filled. This needs careful consideration now. Colours can not be assessed until the design is full . Colours only happen in context, especially the more neutral tints.

This kind of work has occurred at regular intervals during my time since college. In about 1969 I did this based on the golden section-

And this one, using emulsion paint and masking tape. The figures, from drawings of pupils, were cut out and stuck on.

Some years later there was this one -

It is time to pay homage to Paul Klee who did these in the early 20th century-

The design is simple but the balance of colours is expressive and evocative.

I have put today's painting into Photoscape and played around with it. In the first I have superimposed transparent white rectangles.

Colours can be swapped.

or this

or this. I wish painting was as quick!

Ah well. Back to the painting and some decisions about how to improve it.........

Wow! So much great work. Like the way you've looked at Klee and then superimposed your own style onto the images.
