Friday December 4. Mixing paint and collage. An experiment.

Inspired by one of you who took part in last Friday's Zoom Critique! Feeling somewhat low with the present hermit life, I just started daubing with acrylics. Having made a start, I was worried that it would turn into just another swirly blobby indulgence, so I started tearing strips of tissue paper and added them with PVA to the swirls.

More added and turned on its side. I had a feeling about clouds over a landscape, so I added some mountains.

To keep it a bit random I kept changing from paint to collage.

A smaller brush enables some clearer forms to emerge

Started doing more with paint and downgrading the starkness of the red tissue. I put it back as a landscape. It suddenly reminds me of the visionary illustrations by William Blake...

I finished the painting by adding more blue, including a thin wash to produce rounded solidity to the “clouds”.

Sometimes it is interesting to start out with nothing much in mind and see where it leads. I'm not sure about the tissue experiment as I have ended up painting much of it away. And, oh dear, it has something of being another reference to feelings of dread about threats lurking in the atmosphere.
