26.02.2024 A new start.

I'm going to try and use this blog to classify or make some sense of the work I have been doing over the last 18 months or so. I started doing quick, “automatic” scribbles, to see what happens when you make marks without forward planning and trying not to direct the progress of the drawing.

This is of course impossible. If one mark leads to another decisions are bound to be made and the work takes on a direction. I can say that most of the drawings came as a surprise to me. The work is done in charcoal on A2 size paper, with a lot of attacking with a rubber to make light lines. Sometimes coloured pastel is added and sometimes a small area is developed with black watercolour and a small brush.

The first ones, started in Sept 2022, were the simplest.

The above started just as vertical lines, then I tried to gradually change angle to 90 degrees. If viewed upside down it looks too much like a waterfall.

This one was done with pastels plus a little charcoal.

I will do more blogs to show some of the range of images that have emerged over some 140 drawings
